Choice of Anesthesia and Postoperative Pain Control
Anesthesia and pain control
Surgical anesthesia has become an extremely reliable act. The choice between General Anesthesia and Regional Anesthesia (anesthetizing only the lower body) is discussed with the anesthesiologist, during a dedicated consultation.

Post-operative pain control is a top priority. In order to control it as well as possible, we apply a multimodal protocol:
- An analgesic block performed under ultrasound just before the intervention
- Infiltration of a local anesthetic at the end of the procedure in and around the operated joint
- Cryotherapy (application of cold packs)
- Pain medication and anti-inflammatories will be prescribed to you according to our protocol and the treatment will be adapted if necessary to your medical history and/or allergies.
- Specifically for knee surgeries: Compression brace and elevation of the knee 20cm above the heart – helps reduce swelling and pain
The knee will remain warm, sore and enlarged for at least 3 months. This is a normal and expected development as the inflammation of the peri-surgical tissues subsides gradually.
